AREA 11 ~ LOBSTER BUDDY-UP SURVEY
At the request of members, SEA-NL proposes polling the 262 licensed lobster fishermen/women in Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 11 of fishing zone 3Ps to gauge support for changing DFO policy to allow for buddy-up in the 2024 fishery.
DFO provided SEA-NL with the complete list of lobster licence holders in LFA 11 (minus contact information), after we informed officials in St. John’s of our proposed poll. (Normally, there are confidentiality issues.)
DFO has informed SEA-NL that any official industry proposal must also demonstrate “broad support” for the change.
An official poll of all lobster licence holders in Area 11 would tell the tale whether broad support exists.
As with any proposed DFO policy change where there’s both support and opposition amongst enterprise owners. SEA-NL takes a neutral position on the issue, and in polling licensed harvesters.
The goal is a poll result that would be above reproach.
